"Cat eye" gemstones exhibit an optical effect called "chatoyancy", which resembles a cat's eye. This effect is created by fine parallel fibres inside the stone, which produce luminous stripes when exposed to light. It is based on quartz that is cut in the form of cat's eye cabochons.
